knowledge puffs up but love builds up, if any presumes to know something he doesn't know as he ought to know (1 Corinthians 8:1-2)
Have you ever seen a blowfish or pufferfish? I few years back I caught a small blowfish and it "puffed" up in my hands. It was amazing but also a little alarming, which is why they puff up to defend themselves. The Greek word puffs up literally means to inflate by blowing, to puff up. The idea is that knowledge without love puffs up. It is such an important concept to understand if we want to serve Jesus, to build up others.love is long suffering, loving, kind, not envying. Love doesn't brag nor puff up (1 Corinthians 13:4)If we look at the word puffed up as used in the scriptures we see it is a kind of arrogance and pride (1 Corinthians 4:6; 1 Corinthians 4:18; 1 Corinthians 5:2). It is an earthly way of thinking even if that knowledge comes from scripture (Colossians 2:18). Being puffed up is also a prideful unwillingness to acknowledge wrong. Paul corrects the church in Corinth because they were puff up, they had knowledge, or thought they knew but did not know how to correct within the church (1 Corinthians 5:1-2;1 Corinthians 6).
People puffed up are not teachable. Some people have seared their conscience (1 Timothy 4:1-3). They think they know but do not and until that mindset changes you can not help them. Puffed up people are not beyond redemption and transformation, but it takes prayer, tough love, and I believe a special kind of ministry. Paul tells us to not to associate with these kind of believers so they realize their ways and repent (1 Corinthians 5:11). Sometimes this kind of tough love is the course of action that God will use to humble them. The point is so when they become humble they are teachable and can be brought back into fellowship. Even this kind of knowledge and correction done without love is puffed up.
for the one weak, the brother for whom Christ died, strays by what is your knowledge, in this you sin against your brother and wound his conscience being weak, you sin against Christ (1 Corinthians 8:)
You sin against Christ, what you do to the least of his brethren you do to him. If you cause a brother to stumble, you presume to have knowledge you don't have. Faith without love is nothing, knowledge without love doesn't build up and can cause little children to stumble, wounding their conscious. Peter writes the goal of faith is the salvation of the soul, having a good conscious toward God (1 Peter 1:7-9; 1 Peter 3:21).
[love] is not self seeking (1 Corinthians 13:5)
We know in our hearts whether the motivation of our knowledge is to build up the other person, or if it is puffed up, prideful, or self-seeking. Let the love that came down always be our north star. It is important, Jesus gave harsh words against those who cause his little ones to stumble (Matthew 18:6). We always should look at the maturity of those around us and act accordingly. Truth in love the church grows. Love energizes faith, as it is is the bond (it holds, it doesn't cause stumbling) that leads to maturity. Love builds up.
