Earnestly desire the greater gifts, but now I will show you a way beyond comparison.*
If we read on we will find out what is the way beyond comparison. Out of all the gifts there is one that is the greatest, the way beyond comparison. This gift surpasses our human understanding but it is something within reach, "that able, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth both knowing the love of Christ surpassing knowledge, and that being filled to all the fullness of God."* There is a gift of Agape love, which speaks of devotion, of an active love associated with true relationship, which often requires sacrifice. Foremost, we love God because He first loved us, we experience this love. God loves and favors not based upon merit but according to grace. He is devoted to us in love and desires that we be devoted to Him in love. God is love and the greatest gift he gives man and the greatest way, a way beyond comparison, is agape love.
Greater love has no one this, that someone set aside the one his life for the one his friends.*
The greatest gift God gave was His Son, in this His love was shown in that God set aside his Son, "for in this way the one God loved the world, he gave the one only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life."* How does God prove His love? who would love you enough to sacrifice for you? And what great love for us that the Son would set aside his life. And what greater gloried the Father, that the Son loved so much as to be obedient in such a task. This is why agape love is often called sacrificial love. A definition of sacrifice is forfeiture of something highly valued for the sake of one considered to have a greater value.* Why did Jesus accomplish such a task? because he knew of His value to the Father, so He valued the Father, value means to honor. Why did the Father send the Son? "for in this way," showed his love toward us despite our weakness our heavenly Father, being devoted to us, we are known and loved by Him through the Son. This is a great gift of love.
If having all the faith so as to remove mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.*
Jesus is the author and perfecter of faith, giving a measure to all who believe, even so faith is a fruit of the Spirit Paul writes.* God exists Truth and Love, in fullness, and Jesus came in fullness of the Father, of Grace and Truth.* To be increasing in maturity into the full measure of His stature or image, is to be in His fullness, of grace and truth. We get to this fullness by faith active in love or truth in love. Faith without love is nothing, as faith and love are interconnected. Jesus gives gifts to men, these greater gifts are to be desired but the most important to God "remains faith, hope, and love, these three, now, the greatest of these is the one love." So in these gifts we are becoming His workmanship, but the greatest gift is love. What does this mean, that love is greatest?
even if I feed all, if this one I become, and if I deliver up the one, my body, to be burned but do not have love, I am nothing.*
So the rich young ruler, whom Jesus told to give away all, if he would have done so without love it would have been nothing, but he did not as he loved the things of the world. "do not agape love the world and the one in the world, if anyone loves the world the love of the Father exists not in him."* Agape love is devotion, so do not be to the world. This is an interesting and challenging verse, it doesn't say "do not love the things of the world" but it says "do not love the world and the one in the world." Such speaks of existing of and being devoted to God and to one another, the household of faith. "So then as having opportunity especially do good to all, yea, greatest the household of faith."* The household of faith, is the family of God, to be treasured greatest. We are to reach the lost but it is a contradiction of truth to say the greater love is for those of the world over that oh loving those of the household of faith, His brethern.
the one not loving doesn't know God, because God exists love.*
Though we can say we love God, so would those who wish to deceive us, claiming to have the greater gifts, of prophecy, teaching, preaching... but we see if one doesn't have the greatest gift of love, they are false. Understanding that love is the greatest gift is important, as the world can not love as God loves as they do not know Him. How is love telling that we know God? if we do not love one another we say we do not know God. So love is not becoming as one who feeds all, no, I can give away all but not love, so it is one who exists Love, as God exists Love. This is a interesting question, if I say words without love, even the gospel, is it as a clanging cymbal? More so Jesus said His Words are Spirit and Truth, so if one has not the Spirit of Christ, what spirit guides his words? Certainly, I believe understanding this greater gift both protects the Church from the deceiver and challenges believers to exist in love.
by this all know that you exist disciples, if having love for one another.*
Jesus said the world will know us by this greatest gift of love. So what is the greatest way to evangelize the world? surely, love is "a way beyond comparison." Notice, the word exist, it speaks of existing in Christ, a new creation, and if I exist a disciple I walk in fellowship with God and my brothers. If we exist Love we "have" love, being or practicing devotion to God and His family. We are being perfected in love, as a child talked, thought, reasoned, as a child but when I became a man I set aside childish ways. So have you seen the over all concept that Paul writes of Love? it is the same concept of faith being active in love, and of how "truth in love" we are growing in Christ, looking dimly as in a mirror, "Presently, I know in part, yea (God), I will fully (attain to a knowledge of the Son, of this greatest gift of love) just as also known."
now then as great desire for humankind that you practice; practice also together, for this is the law and the prophets.*
This verse is call the Golden Rule, or Greatest rule of Christianity. It is often translated as "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" but here we see much more meaning. Christianity should desire or practice love for the lost, "great desire for humankind that you practice" but "practice also together," for this is the law and the prophets. What is the Greatest Commandment? "The commandments... and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law."7 Think about it, you sacrifice and give cheerfully as to God, but in your time of need others do not give cheerfully to you, as if you are not of great importance to God. "Practice also together," as Jesus said, what we do to His brethren we do to Him. Loving God, and Loving one another, is to be devoted, active, in practice, this is the greatest gift.
both knowing the love of Christ surpassing knowledge, and that being filled to all the fullness of God.*
To being fully known, to the full measure of the stature of Christ, in the knowledge of the Son. It is a sign of maturity, if I fully know Him, in fullness of Grace and truth, I will be devoted to Him in love and will love others also. And do we not see how? Paul writes the gifts are to equip the saints for the work of ministry? What is the work of ministry? "to build up the Body of Christ, until we all attain unity of faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, to perfect maturity, to measure stature of the one Christ."* The good work of ministry is His workmanship, which speaks of the new creation in Christ. So see how we are being perfected and how we grow the Body; faith active in love.
Exists no fear in the one loved, but more so the one perfected in love sets aside the fear, since fear has power in fear of punishment, yea, the one fearing is not perfected in the one Love.*
It is an amazing concept, in Christ, God is perfecting his children in love, not in the fear of punishment. The Mosaic Law had power in the fear of punishment, and even today, some have been bewitched, fallen from grace, returning to a system that did not perfect its children. Notice the word sets aside, it is the same word here, "the one loving never comes to an end, whether a prophet set aside, whether speaking of tongues ceases, whether knowledgeable set aside. Now then, knowledge from a part and prophecy from a part, but when the one perfected coming the one in part set aside.* The other gifts are parts, these are set aside, when we are fully perfected. Love is set aside being the greatest in importance but also love never ends. The focus is on the one loving, not so much love itself, but the one existing as Love as God exists as love. So we see what counts, faith active in love, a faith with works or deeds of love. If I have the gift of teaching and do not love, I am nothing.
Therefore since we have a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, set aside every weight and the sin easily distracting us, running with endurance the one race placed before us...*
Love sets aside fear of punishment, and it sets aside a multitude of sin, "above all posses a fervent love, with view of your nature, for love covers a multitude of sin"* Why did Jesus die for our sin? because of Love, our sin was set aside. How do we set aside weight and sin to run the race? is it like one would motivate a jackass, with a pricking prod? fear of punishment? Or how about a carrot and stick, rewards and fear of punishment? Possibly we find motivation in love for the lost or that there is a great cloud of witness? such glorifies God, that we are His work. "Remain under trials as far as education, God is treating you the one as a child, for what child whom a Father doesn't instruct? But if you exist without education which all sons share, then exist illegitimate children and not sons."* How does one run the race? how does one endure discipline?
Take heed that no one runs short of the grace of God, no root of bitterness grows up troubling and by it alone many are defiled.*
God loves His children so it is love motivating the child to endure, a Church that endures is one that fixes its eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of faith and one rooted in love. How does a runner fall short? he "runs short of the grace of God" or he is not rooted and grounded in love, as the principle of sowing states. "Christ dwells, the one in your hearts through faith being rooted and grounded in love." If not rooted he "runs short of the grace of God," so we Grace and Truth or faith active in Love, or truth in Love. Righteousness is by faith, that it be according to grace, not by works. Such a person established in faith and rooted and grounded in love doesn't fall short, so a Church that exists in Love builds up little children in faith active in love or truth in love or grace and truth. Paul writes of a church fallen from grace, so what does a church active in faith and love look like?
the one loving patiently, loving gently, the one not envying, the one loving not boasting, not arrogant, not rude, not self-seeking, the one not provoking, no accounting of wrong, no pleasure in the wrong doing, but sympathizing in truth, bears all, believes all, hopes all, endures all.*
Is this truth, that "God exists love?" And is it true "the one not loving doesn't know God?" If so then if we love God we will obey the words of His Son, to love one anther, this is how we know we love God. How do we know we exist as God, who exists as Love? We see characteristic of God's love, called Agape Love as it is characteristics of God, these are fruit of the Spirit, and if fruit of the Spirit then surely God exists this way, "a way beyond comparison." The glory of the new surpasses the old, its called a Dispensation of Grace. In the new God is perfecting His children in Love and in Christ the Father shows His Love and kindness towards, and divine wisdom, by the good pleasure of His will. So we define who God truly is, Truth and Love. If He exists this way, and we know Him then we should exist this way, raising or instructing our children in His ways., "a way beyond comparison," a way of love.
Now, truth in love we are growing in every way into Him, the one who is the head, Christ.*
Notice, some translations say "speaking the truth in love" but we do not see the word for speaking. Truth is active in Love, or truth is being accomplished in love. If I speak truth without love its like a resounding gong, like beating the jackass with a stick, fear of punishment, condemnation. How is the child motivated to endure? Truth in Love. It is the truth that increases our faith, Jesus is truth and exists Love, so His Truth and Love increases. Paul writes, this is what counts, faith active in love. So we see why love is the greatest gift, faith without love doesn't increase, no growth, thus it is not true faith. Now, remains faith, hope, and love, and the greatest of these is love. We are being perfected in love and one day we will reach fullness, however, God's love is without bounds. All the greater gifts are for our perfection, so these will be set aside when we become fully perfected, but love never ends.
bearing all, believing all, hoping all, enduring all.*
If we know God and God exists Love then we exists Love. But what does agape love look like? Agape love truly loves you, as it abides in love. True love bears with you, as Jesus bore our sin, love overlooks a multitude of sin, overlooking the sin and helping to lift the burden of sin. The presence of agape love is not just during the success, but in the valley of death, He is always with us, lover never fails. Agape love endures the hard times with you, love doesn't forsake you, love gives hope, as it abides in hope. Agape love believes in you, as it abides in faith. Agape love abides in faith, hope, and love, the greatest of these is love. It is not self-seeking, a one sided relationship, always taking, never giving back. Notice, how believing is a characteristic of love, Love believes in you. Faith is a gift, but faith is only active in love thus Love is the greatest gift.
according the working of each individual part, makes the body, the one grow so that building itself up in Love.*
We see another reason why Love is the greatest gift, without a unity of faith active in love the Church is nothing, it doesn't grow. We have seen earlier that the gifts are called a part and these are set aside but not the greater gift of Love. A part speaks to each individual body, His workmanship, and to the whole Body of Christ, so the body grows through the parts or gifts building itself up in Love. This is through unity of faith, Spirit, a bond of peace, however, without love the other parts are set aside, nothing. The American Church spends great resources in the name of spreading the good news but statistics say its growing less than 1%. How do you define less than 1% of a person, can we call that growth? So according to the statistics this great expenditure is not increasing the Body significantly only shifting the members and gifts around. Significant is that it is loosing its children, so much so some are calling it the Great Decline.* My point is to not be negative but to ask, why is the American Church in decline? if the Church grows by faith active in love then somethings is missing? Certainly, we see how important the greatest gift of love is, without love all other parts are set aside, not actively building up.
... now in fact remains faith, hope, and love, these three, now, the greatest of these is the one love.*
So we have arrived, "a way beyond comparison," to the greatest gift, Love. Agape Love is the greatest gift, it is to be desired above all other gifts, as the greatest gift. Jesus is the Way to the Father, such is a great gift of love from which we receive all other gifts. Other gifts are given from the measure of the one Grace or from the riches of His Grace.* And from the the riches of His glory, who is Christ, the greatest gift of love, given to man. As the Son exists in the fullness of the Father, of Grace and Truth, so do we. Agape love is not set aside, it is without bounds, we are and will be always experiencing this love, it is everlasting, eternal, never ending thus the greatest gift. We have received the greatest gift, we have known and have become devoted to Him in love. Because God exists love, and we know Him, now we exist in Him, and exist in Love, giving this greatest gift to others. This is our God, the one true God, who exists Love, whom we know and love. We sacrifice the things the world values so that we may know Him, the One of Greater value. And this is the greatest gift of Love.
